The Toyota Prado has used two main diesel engines in Australia. The 3.0L 1KD-FTV is a four-cylinder common rail diesel that powered the 120 Series and early 150 Series Prado, with each emissions standard requiring different fuel injectors to match the vehicle's specific fuel system tuning.

The 2.8L 1GD-FTV replaced the 1KD in the 150 Series from around 2015 onwards and uses a different Denso common rail injector. Both are sophisticated electronic fuel systems where the ECU sends electrical signals to each injector based on real-time data including engine load, speed, and temperature. The part number required depends on which engine and emissions standard your Prado is fitted with.

Euro 4 and Euro 5 1KD-FTV injectors are not interchangeable. Euro 4 Prado models use the 095000-7780 series injector, while Euro 5 models use the 295050-0460 series. Note that the original injectors removed from your vehicle will carry the correct series code on the body, which is the most reliable reference point. 

The two designs also carry a different calculated number of ECU compensation parameters, meaning the same number from one emissions standard cannot be applied to the other. Installing a unit where the numbers match the wrong Euro spec will result in fuelling imbalance, rough running, and an ECU fault.

To ensure the process is completed correctly, have the coding carried out by a qualified mechanic or authorised workshop with the appropriate diagnostic equipment.

Applying the original injectors' codes to the wrong replacement unit, or skipping coding entirely, causes the ECU to default to a generic fuelling map that produces rough running and poor fuel economy. The engine should not be run until coding is complete.

Replacement of Prado diesel injectors is typically required every 100,000 to 150,000 kilometres, though this varies based on the vehicle's usage pattern, fuel quality, and maintenance practices. Supplied new, genuine Denso injectors are engineered to last the full service interval under normal operating conditions. 

The 1KD-FTV's common rail system atomises fuel into the combustion chamber at very high pressure, and the injector nozzle tip is subject to wear and carbon accumulation over time.

Don't leave injector maintenance until symptoms appear. The labour involved in a late-stage replacement is often greater than addressing the issue at the first signs of wear. Staying on top of filter servicing is the most practical way to reach the upper end of the service interval.

At minimum, always fit new copper washers and O-rings during installation. Reusing old seals is a consistent cause of combustion leaks and premature injector failure after what was otherwise a clean installation.

Bailey's also strongly recommends replacing the high pressure fuel lines on any higher-kilometre Prado, as the internal steel lining of these lines begins to deteriorate and releases microscopic particles that travel directly into the new injectors. At this point, inspect and clean the injector seats before the new units go in.

On the 1KD-FTV, the suction control valve is worth inspecting at the same time, as a worn SCV often contributes to the rail pressure inconsistencies that shorten injector life in the first place.
