Genuine IHI Turbo to suit Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series 1VD - Passenger Side
IHI supplies the factory turbochargers for Toyota's flagship V8 diesel, and this genuine IHI turbo for Toyota 1VD engines represents decades of engineering refinement in forced induction technology. The 200 Series relies on twin turbochargers working in harmony to deliver the power and torque these 2.8-tonne wagons need. This passenger side turbocharger is manufactured to the same exacting standards as the original equipment, with precision-machined components and careful balancing to handle the heat and stress of Australian touring conditions.

Vehicle Fitment
Suits Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series fitted with 1VD-FTV twin-turbo diesel engines. This is the passenger side turbocharger.
The Role of Forced Induction in Modern Diesels
Modern diesel engines like the 1VD-FTV depend on turbocharging to meet both performance and emissions requirements. Without boost pressure, a diesel this size would be sluggish and inefficient. The turbocharger recovers waste exhaust energy and converts it into compressed air, forcing more oxygen into the combustion chambers. This allows more fuel to be burned efficiently, creating the power you need for highway overtaking, towing heavy loads, or climbing steep grades with a loaded vehicle. When the passenger side turbo begins deteriorating, the engine loses that critical boost pressure. You'll feel reduced pulling power, particularly noticeable when towing or loaded, longer turbo lag between throttle application and power delivery, unusual whistling or rattling sounds under acceleration, and rising exhaust gas temperatures that can trigger warning systems.
Factory Engineering vs Aftermarket Compromises
Genuine IHI turbochargers are built specifically for the thermal and mechanical demands of the 1VD-FTV. The turbine housing is cast from high-nickel alloy designed to withstand repeated heat cycling without cracking. The bearing cartridge uses Toyota's specified tolerances and clearances to work with the engine's oil pressure and viscosity. The compressor wheel is precisely balanced to eliminate vibration at operating speeds that exceed what most people can comprehend. Generic aftermarket turbos are often designed to fit multiple applications, meaning compromises in materials, sizing, and engineering. They might bolt on, but they won't deliver the same reliability or performance envelope as genuine IHI units.
What Accelerates Turbo Wear
Heat cycling is particularly hard on turbochargers. Rapid temperature changes from hard acceleration followed by immediate shutdown don't allow the turbo to cool gradually. The passenger side turbo on the 1VD sees significant heat exposure. Letting the engine idle for 30-60 seconds after hard driving allows oil to continue circulating and prevents heat soaking the oil that remains in the turbo. Boost leaks from deteriorated hoses or loose clamps force the turbo to work harder to maintain pressure, increasing wear. Physical damage from ingesting debris through the air intake can destroy the compressor wheel instantly. Make sure your air filter is serviced regularly and properly sealed.
Proper Installation Procedures
Before bolting on the new passenger side turbocharger, inspect all intake and exhaust connections for wear or damage. Replace any questionable hoses, clamps, or gaskets now rather than risking a boost leak later. Fill the turbo's oil feed port with fresh engine oil before connecting the oil lines. This pre-lubes the bearing surfaces and prevents metal-on-metal contact during first startup. Once everything's connected, crank the engine without starting it (disconnect the fuel cutoff or use the starter) to build oil pressure before combustion begins. This ensures oil reaches the turbo before it starts spinning under exhaust pressure.
Warranty
12 months or 20,000km warranty, whichever occurs first. Warranty covers manufacturing defects and faulty materials. Gasket kit part # VED20081GK sold separately and required for installation.
